The staff team at Londiani Sub-County hospital, Kericho county, Kenya have a wealth of knowledge and experience in maternal and newborn care. But they are challenged by the limited resources available to their newborn unit. The alternative for sick babies in need of special care in Londiani is to transfer them to the nearest hospital with the necessary facilities which is a distance of 50km away on roads that may be in bad condition in parts and without use of an ambulance. This puts the lives of too many babies at risk.
The hospital needs a new born care unit that can provide around-the-clock care to sick or premature babies with the resources, equipment and specially trained health care providers that will give every baby the best possible start in life.
Mayo University Hospital formed a partnership with Londiani Sub-County Hospital 14 years ago with a vision of a world where healthy communities can thrive as a result of strengthened health systems, empowered staff and quality health care. We are determined to support the staff in Londiani with this challenge to new born care.
Giving Tuesday on November 29th is a global day of giving and your donation could make all the difference. The building that is the new born unit needs renovations to the roof, interior plumbing, electrical upgrade to come up to standard, repairs and repainting to interior walls & ceilings.
Equipment needs upgrading - 2 out of 4 baby incubators are fully functional and the others need replacing. Training for staff in latest specialised care is needed.
Do you know the difference in infant mortality rate between Ireland and Kenya? In Kericho 1 in 26 babies die before their first birthday and in Ireland the number is 1 in 491. A fully functioning new born unit is a crucial part of efforts to give babies born in Londiani a better chance at survival.
