The first HIV/AIDS cases in Uganda were reported in 1982 in the district of Rakai when a mysterious disease affected seventeen fishermen on the lakeshores of Victoria at Kasensero landing site. At that time, Lyantonde was still part of Rakai and being a major town in the district; the consequences of the pandemic were and are still enormous. In Lyantonde district, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has had grave consequences on the population especially children below 12 years of age
