Boys Matter, Too

A fundraiser by Michael Shafer

Please help us raise $5,000 to establish a loan fund to send deserving boys for higher education. Yes, the deck is stacked against girls, no question about it, and no place more so that here in rural Thailand.

But in our experience, the boys here are the truly lost. They have no role models because there are no meaningful roles left for men.

The men they see around them are uneducated, unskilled, drunks and meth addicts.

So what do boys do?

By the time they are 15, they are out of school, hanging out smoking, drinking, doing drugs and playing with motorbikes like the older guys. They’re a big deal if they get a minimum wage job. They don’t listen when we point out that they will likely earn the same amount at 50 – and it won’t be so big then.

We see the effects every day at Warm Heart. We have lots of girls who become promising young women. We have few boys and very few promising young men.

We do have a few, however, in whom we invest all of our hope and dreams – because we have no funds to support them for upper vocational-technical school or university.

Yes, we do understand why girls need support and our Higher Education Fund (originally called the “Girls Go to College Fund”) does just that.

Right now, however, we are asking for your help to send our boys on, too. They also deserve to escape the nowhere lives they were born into.

With your help, we hope to see them mature into men who can provide a new, better kind of role model for the next generation of boys coming along.
