A positive asylum decision marks the moment when a recognized refugee is completely abandoned by the authorities. Although a positive step, it is the beginning of a difficult journey. Within days you have to leave the reception camp, which means you lose access to the already scarce services offered by the Greek state: accommodation, food, medical care. As of then, you are on your own, expected to fend for yourself without any financial support. Therefore, it is a crucial moment at which to support displaced persons in their journey to autonomy.
ECHO100PLUS’ Social Integration team, consisting of 3 social workers and 1 lawyer, is often the first orientation point after a months-long wait for asylum in a remote reception camp. The team assesses the individual’s specific situation, including their social, legal and medical needs, their skills and qualifications, and the status of family members. At the first appointment a tailor-made plan is co-created to support the individual to reach independence as quickly as possible.
Range of services provided by our Social Integration Team:
• Referring service-users to language and computer classes, vocational training, further education, and qualifications, either at the HUB or with other organisations
• Assistance with bureaucratic matters to acquire the necessary papers for work, registering children in child care facilities and schools
• Supporting with CV creation and preparing for job interviews
• Helping to navigate the complicated and confusing landscape of support services in Greece, referring to other organisations when needed
• Establishing relationships within our network of potential employers, visiting job fairs, directing service-users to job-search platforms
ECHO’s Social Integration Unit provides key information and services to empower individuals and their families to settle in and rebuild their lives - Please help us to sustain their crucial work!
