We provide books to deprived school children in rural Kenya and to use the gift to promote social and ethical values in an environment where behavioural role models are lacking. Pata Kitabu works by making books available to children in poor areas of the country, doing this through recognition, awards and prizes. The project derives from the recognition that many children in the rural and urban areas have restricted access to books. Hardly does one find a child that has a book to call its own. Even among educated Kenyans the habit of book reading barely exists so gaining knowledge after education ceases. Acquiring the reading habit will encourage these children to continue educating themselves after schooling. Our goal is to change the mind-set of a generation of young people so that high moral values are seen as a way to success in life. Children are issued well researched books which help instil values important to their future as useful members of society. These children live in communities where good role models are few or non-existent. Regrettably, greed, dishonesty and selfishness are more often perceived as means of achievement! "The program have seen enormous benefits to the schools; children who have been awarded books during a pilot have been noted to improve effectively in social and academics, the overall school discipline of children has improved with minimum cases of indiscipline reported parents teachers and Ministry of education are enthusiastic by the scheme and recognise the benefit. Overall the schools have overtime improved in their academic performance. Recently Ainapkoi Primary school was recognised as the most improved school overall in the county a school Pata Kitabu Foundation started working with the last 2 years. Additionally the project schools are experiencing high enrolment rate e.g Langalanga primary school that attributes good leadership adopted in these schools and children develop more confidence being in a child friendly learning environment where children rights are given priority". Pata Kitabu is thus a multi-level project with multiple mutually beneficial outcomes. It is simple in concept and design and can piggy-back on existing youth programs with an existing infrastructure. Our Objective To equip young people with life skills that is necessary for their personal development. To capacity build teachers in the target schools so they are able to mentor and support young people with skills that are important to their future as useful members of society. To provide Books that enhances high moral values to promote social and ethical philosophies and encourage the reading habit for youth to continue educating themselves after schooling. Our Vision: A generation that appreciates high values for personal and social development
