Last March, Ken Sarno's wife Susan read an article on the Huffington Post about Portugal. The Man working with us and StubHub Foundation. "Every kid should have access to the tools that will shape who they become as adults. I have no idea where I would be if I didn't have instruments available at a young age," said band member Zach Carothers.
Well, as a result, Ken came to our office to donate 10 beautiful electric guitars and four bass guitars from his personal collection. We're happy to report that all of his guitars have new homes in schools across Los Angeles, including Centennial High School in Compton.
Centennial band director Manuel Castaneda brought Julian, a student and percussionist, to help him pick out a few guitars. Manuel couldn't help but to boast about Julian's straight A's this semester and his recent admission to the 2015 California State Summer School for the Arts program. The sky is the limit for this new guitarist.
We thank Ken, Portugal. The Man and all of our wonderful donors for making the year ahead brighter for many students! Find out here how you can donate a musical instrument!

A rock legend comes through
By Felice Mancini - President and CEO
Eddie, Jose and Vince
In June 2014, Jose Cortes, a proud guitar player in Vince Womack's Jazz Band, graduated from Foshay Learning Academy in South Los Angeles. His best memories in school were being in band.
"I remember that every time we had a performance, every single one of the band members gave their very best. There were times when we played for just a handful of people and other times we played for hundreds of people. No matter how many people we performed for, everyone played with such passion that it was contagious."
"I have never seen my students so excited about music. The instruments have given new life to our band program! Because of your donation, new students can join our instrumental ensembles and our current students can now play on quality instruments.
It is cliché, but at my school, music truly saves lives by providing students with an opportunity for success and a positive activity to pursue in and outside of school. Your donation will put several students on the right track in life- something for which I will be forever grateful."
Sarah H. Fischer, Columbus North International School, Columbus OH
Sarah is just one of many teachers who saw the delight on her student's faces when receiving new instruments this school year - instruments that you helped to provide. Spring concerts will sound so much better now that kids will play on great instruments. Their confidence will soar as will their love of playing music in school. Thank you for giving them this opportunity.
We awarded 89 schools this school year and we have just opened up our new grant cycle! It is our goal to put hundreds of instruments into 90 deserving schools where thousands of kids will benefit. We couldn’t do it without you and we’re very grateful. Visit our Facebook page to read some great stories from grateful students, teachers, parents and donors. On their behalf, we thank you!
