You are developing rural women by literacy

Women meeting for literacy class CV/Kibati, DRC
Women meeting for literacy class CV/Kibati, DRC

In rural regions, women are limited because of their inability to read and write. This situation has a bad impact on themselves, to children and the whole family, community and society.

 This project which is funded by the Guernsey States for 12 months, is supporting 150 women and girls in Kibati, through Children’s Voice in Nyiragongo territory around 12 km from Goma town, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

 The program has three goals:

- To allow women and girls literacy skills ;

- As mothers and sisters, to enable them for the better follow children’s schooling such as at Kibati center in catch-up program;

- To improve women’s self-confidence and give them time to share experiences and initiatives in developing their villages and communities.

Consolata Wimana: I am married and have 5 children. I am happy to be able to write my name and to read some reports from my children.  I was shame to come near those who are educated.  Now I want all my children, boys and girls, to go to school. Among all my family members, I am the first one among women to learn to read and to rwite.

Elisabeth Kabumba, I am so excited to be able to read and to write. This time, I vote myself when last election I could not and someone did for me. I still think he took had voted his candidate, not mine.

We thank our donors, how big is their generosity in educating women, which is to educate all the nation especially this moment waiting for election.

Women in focus group discussion by CV in Masisi

Context of the project:

Girl child marriage is a gross human rights violation that puts young girls out of education, mired in health risks and keeps them in poverty. In Democratic Republic of Congo, generally, 43% of women between 25 and 49 years old have been married before 18 years, said Mrs. Kati Bijou; Ministry of Gender and family on15 may 2015. She had called children to denounce any attempt to marry them before the mature age. In Kamango, Beni territory, 50% of married women got first baby before 18 years old (ECI research, 2013).

Summary of our activities

Since 2010, Children’s Voice is working hard to aware communities to end child marriage and to promote education for girls as well. Workshops, conferences, meetings are organized to conscious people such as families, community leaders, etc. From January to May 2015, more than 873 men, women and girls have been trained to end child marriage in Nord Kivu.

 Story about two beneficiaries: a mother and her daughter:

“I am Nyirasafari. I have 5 daughters. Four of them have been married when they had 14 and 15 years. I thought I did well to protect them from early pregnancy and to save my family dignity. Myself I have been married when I had 12 years. It was the tradition practices. The diploma of a girl was to get a husband. After this workshop organized by Children’s Voice, I really regret for that and take decision to work hard to support education for Ester my youngest daughter.

Ester story: “I am 14 years old. I am happy to be at school than to be married. My dream is to be a lawyer and to become the defender of young girls”.

How you generosity gives new hope to teenagers

Story about a beneficiary:

Feza, 16 years old: I was taken and abused by militia soldiers in Walikale bush when I was 13. Tree years later, I came back to village. Everybody was despised. It was a shame. I decided to leave and go to Goma town. I start new life with prostitute girls. I was the youngest of the team. There life was had. I was bitten many times by my teammates even by men and abused. My face was full of scars. I had passed nights in the gutter using sex to keep my life safe from gangsters. One day I was sick. They dropped me on the road because they said if I die, no one would bury me if I die.

From there someone took me to Children’s Voice dispensary, later to CBK hospital. When I was healed, I got psychosocial assistance and start a vocational training in the training center. I learned to make clothes. Now I have a workshop of tailors and I am helping new girls (ex prostitutes) beginners to perform after training in Children’s Voice centers. I enjoy my new life.

I have a dream, to become a big designer!

Summary of our activities

The vocational training program is giving more hope to vulnerable girls. In these three months, 35 girls got professional skill and get job in different workshops in North Kivu province. The training is coupled to psychosocial assistance, management and marketing skill.
