Happy Women's Day!

In honor of the International Day of Women (a day when men in Burkina Faso will go to the market, buy groceries and cook food for the family),

GLOBALGIVING WILL MATCH YOUR DONATION TO BARKA'S GIRL FUND CAMPAIGN

STARTING RIGHT NOW AND UNTIL MATCHING FUNDS ARE GONE!

Help us to end "period poverty" and replace it with menstrual equity in Burkina Faso, where most girls never know about their period until it occurs, and oftentimes it can mean the end of an education.

The 4 projects of the Girl Fund campaign with the highest number of donations from unique donors will win.

Donate just $10 today and help us be among the winners.

This project is receiving technical support from:

  • UNICEF
  • Wateraid
  • Burkina Faso government's Ministry of Women

Impact: To support and increase awareness of MHM for 5000 girls, boys, teachers and parents at Fada N'Gourma's largest high schools, and to construct MHM cabins to address girls' menstrual needs.

JUST RELEASED/NEVER BEFORE SEEN: Today we release a new 3-minute video that brings you into the classroom to see the girls you are directly affecting with your donation. This footage was shot just last week.

A Period Should End a Sentence Not an Education

"Period. End of Sentence." wins Oscar for Best Doc
"Period. End of Sentence." wins Oscar for Best Doc

Dear Supporter of Women and Girls' Rights in Burkina Faso,

During the Oscars telecast this past Sunday, there was a great moment for girls and women around the planet when the director of the Oscar-winning documentary about menstruation said, "A period should end a sentence, not an education!"

In fact, the timing of this award couldn't be better, because today, February 28th @ 9am, begins GlobalGiving's Girl Fund Campaign. BARKA Foundation was one of the few organizations selected to participate in the 2019 Girl Fund Campaign, and we will use this amazing opportunity to raise financing for the next phase of our Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) program, which you helped to launch in 2017.

This new chapter of BARKA's MHM program officially began just last week. BARKA's 5 inspiring project leaders will sensitize 5000 people including girls, boys, teachers and parents at high schools in Fada N'Gourma. We are laying the groundwork to absolutely revolutionize the experience of menstruation for high school girls, making it possible to break the silence of this taboo subject, lifting the stigma associated with it, and providing resources at school such as MHM-adpated latrines in 2 schools this year to provide physical resources for girls to better manage their own menstrual hygiene.

THIS IS HOW WE CREATE EMPOWERMENT! THIS IS HOW WE ACHIEVE MENSTRUAL EQUITY!

YOU CAN JOIN US BY SUPPORTING THE 2019 GIRL FUND CAMPAIGN WITH A DONATION, NO MATTER HOW BIG OR SMALL...

The top four projects with the most unique donors at the end of the campaign will earn a spot in the Girl Fund and receive support for the next full year!  We came really close to being one of the 4 winners in 2017 when our MHM project launched. This year, with your help, we know we can win!

We thank you for your support of girls and women's sexual health and rights in Burkina Faso.

Together we will make a difference!

Barka.

2018: A Year of Impact

Women marching at the Water Fair's Walk for Water
Women marching at the Water Fair's Walk for Water

Dear BARKA Friend,

2018 was one of the most successful in BARKA's history. As the year draws to a close, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on what we accomplished in the past year:

  • Lampiadi: the well BARKA drilled in this village and the impact our work has had for its 700 inhabitants is profiled in a new short film.
  • The Water Fair: BARKA produced and hosted Burkina Faso's national World Water Day celebration in Fada N'Gourma. This 5-day event included a Walk for Water with over 1000 people; an Exhibition for water-centric enterprises, nonprofits and local sellers; a Forum for NGOs to share best practices; concerts, a SLAM competition and comedy performances in The Nights of the Fair; and culminated in a Gala Dinner.  This event was also chronicled in a new short film. This event was so wonderful and such a resounding success, we hope you'll watch the film to get a sense for yourself.
  • At the Water Fair's Gala Dinner, the First Lady of Burkina Faso herself launched a new financial mechanism to fund water projects in the eastern region of Burkina Faso-- the International Water Fund-- and inaugurated the fund with her own $2000 donation!
  • BARKA's Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) program sensitized 500 more girls and formed a partnership with a new Partner School
  • BARKA was part of the coalition of NGOs that organized the Burkina Faso's MHM Day national celebration
  • We worked with 3 villages to establish sustainable community gardens next to the wells BARKA drilled
  • A delegation of 4 BARKA staffers from Burkina Faso came to the US for 3 weeks and attended the Annual Board of Directors Retreat in Maine
  • Two new members were added to BARKA's Board of Directors
  • And finally, to get an indication of what's coming up in 2019, BARKA has developed two new major projects for which it is currently seeking funding: one is to drill 24 wells in a community of 150,000 people and the other is to be the first NGO in Burkina's history to distribute menstrual cups in a comprehensive program to address reproductive and sexual health for 15,000 girls and women.

We couldn't have done this without you, and we'd like to take this opportunity to thank you once again for your generosity, your belief in BARKA's mission, and for your partnership in all of the work mentioned above.

We wish you and your family blessings for a happy and healthy 2019!
