F4LA in full swing! World Cup - here we come!

Root for Life!
Root for Life!

Dear Football for Life Academy supporters! Greetings from the Philippines!

The last few months have been very busy. The main focus and our attention are being captured by the proof of concept within the partnership with the Department of Education Region VIIIwhich we signed in May 2017. Just to remind you briefly, we are delivering the F4LA (Football for Life Academy) curriculum in public school in Leyte. Three schools from Tanauan, Palo and San Joagin were selected for this pilot projects. More than 7 months into this project now, we have delivered a total of 924 sessions, directly engaging close to 865 children.

And great news: we have added one more school to the F4LA programme. Steadfast in our commitment to deliver experiential learning, through football, to schools and communities, we extended F4LA’s reach to the students and players of Sagkahan National High School (SNHS). Check this news out here.

More great news – we have launched the F4LA Classroom Sessions! Held first at the Tanauan School of Craftsmanship and Home Industries Campus last 12 January 2018, the Champions Classroom Sessions is designed to reinforce the values acquired on the field in a classroom setting. F4LA coaches take on the role of educators as they deliver experiential classroom learning sessions that underline and instill values to further support the players’ progress through soft-skills development and critical thinking. Through these sessions, they are encouraged to come up with problem-solving ideas to certain situations that they face in their communities.Learn more about this new platform here.

We have been also very active on the football pitch with different tournaments and community events! On November 18, 2017 we invited Students, Teachers and Parents to connect with F4LA during the 1st F4LA Interschool Cup at Leyte Sports Development Center in Tacloban City. 9 Teams from 5 F4L partner schools battled it out in the inaugural Inter-School Copa Leyte to showcase skills learnt over the first six months of the F4LA programme. This inter-school festival was organized to foster and strengthen the unity and friendship among the players as well provide a platform for their commitment. The F4L coach for the day, John Rex Acuin, has keenly reminded the participants to do their best, to play fair and to have fun. After his keynotes, the children have joyfully preceded to the warm-up exercises led by Jason Arroyo of Arsenal in the Community. Read more about this beautiful day which Department of Education helped to make possible here.

Oh, and, lest we forget (we won’t) – a shout-out to Arsenal in the Community! This partnership has been nothing short of amazing for all of us – the FundLife team, the children enrolled into the programme, and the extended communities. The recently concluded Arsenal in the Community Cup (our fun snaps this way), held last 10 February 2017, is just one of the many amazing collaborations with us that opens up amazing opportunities and experiences to the children we nurture. Your drive, energy, and passion is so contagious that it fuels us to go even further. Arsenal guys, if you are reading this – please know that you absolutely rock! Check out some photos on our F4LA FB page and FundLife FB page for yourself and see what keeps Arsenal youth coaches busy!

Another important process we have just accomplished in FundLife – we have revamped our accounting and financial systems. How did that happen? First, we got an amazing professional accounting guru volunteering 3 months of her time, courtesy of Accounting for International Development (UK) – Marie Chadburn, FCCA. Not only she brought our accounting methods to the 21st century’s standards (yes, guys, we have an online accounting system and it absolutely rocks!), but she has also patiently brushed through our organization’s financial, HR, procurement policies and made a ton of useful suggestions. Furthermore, she spent a lot of time with our coaches training them on financial literacy. Marie, you are our Hero! Thank you for the time and for relentless fight you put to make us do good better – we want more

Finally… Just can’t keep the excitement – so here it goes! The news we’ve been keen to share with you in detail is… our participation in FIFA Football for Hope Festival! Hello Russia! Hello World Cup 2018! FundLife has been selected to officially represent Football4Good movement during the FIFA Football for Hope Festival on June 25-July 5 and we have no words to describe the honour we feel about this nomination!

So, stay tuned and next time we will present to you our deserving delegation!

Successful kick-off of F4L Academy

3rd place: Best Youth Development Programme
3rd place: Best Youth Development Programme

Dear friends and supporters,

The last few months were full of good news! Please spare a few minutes to learn about our progress.

Last time, we mentioned that one of our Football for Life (F4L) coaches – Reuben Ranille – was selected for the Michael Johnson Young Leaders 2017 programme which took place in Dallas, USA, in June. Please read the full report on his life-changing trip here. Watch out: a super motivational read is ahead! A special mention to Coaches Across Continents (CAC) for working very hard to make this happen!

Speaking of CAC, on August 21-25 they hosted yet another seminar for our F4L coaches. Read the feedback of the seminar participants here. Kudos to CAC coaches Charlie and Prateek for a wonderful seminar. We can’t be grateful enough to CAC for sticking around, believing in us and helping us grow.

F4L was again invited to the annual Leyte Interschool Invitational Sports League which ran from August-September 2017. Three F4L teams were registered to participate, one each under the U12 Mixed, U15 Boys, and U15 Girls categories. Our teams competed in the football division for two months, playing seven Saturdays, with one or two games played each weekend until the Championship. F4L joined specifically to give players the opportunity to play with children from private schools, as opposed to the usual community teams they play with. As expected of their hard work, persistence, and dedication to their training, all teams of F4L proudly made it to the Finals last 30 September 2017, with the U12 Mixed Team, U15 Boys, and U15 Girls earning 2nd Place, 3rd Place, and Champions, respectively. Check out some photos here.

As we reported earlier, last May 2017, FundLife signed a partnership with the Department of Education Region VIII, which allowed the organization to introduce and deliver its F4L Academy curriculum to public schools in Leyte. Three schools from Tanauan, Palo, and San Joaquin, Leyte were selected as pilot schools, and they started testing the programme at the beginning of this academic school year. Four months into it, F4LA has successfully delivered a total of 70 sessions, directly engaging close to 200 children. As a result of the F4LA pilot, teachers have already expressed how the programme has been positively affecting the students’ behaviour, both in and outside of class. They have commented on how it has also fostered friendship and a sense of community, as the programme is inclusive of children from across ages, classes, and genders. Students who are engaged in the programme have also shown an increase in attendance in their classes. What a start! Get a better glimpse of F4LA here.

Finally, a sweet news which came in just a few days ago: our F4L Academy programme has just been awarded BRONZE by SPIA ASIA in the category “Best Youth Development Programme of the Year”. What a way to conclude the 3rd quarter!

UNITY AND OPPORTUNITY || 6th Sama-Sama Games

“We are all one.”

This is the main message FundLife International aims to deliver in its annual football event, the Sama-Sama Games. Now on its 6th year of celebrating unity through diversity, the games specifically targeted to give opportunities to players from disadvantaged communities. It took place in Tacloban City on 24 June for the U12 Mixed, U14 Boys, and U17 Girls Categories, and on 01 July 2017 for the Men’s and Women’s Open Categories.

This year, FundLife International partnered with Globe Telecom Inc. (Republika ng TM), to organize the event, in conjunction with their programme TM Football Para Sa Bayan (FPSB), which also aims to deliver and use football as a tool to empower underprivileged youth. They are also in search of two young players - a boy and a girl from the U12 and U14 categories – from across the Philippines to send to Malaysia for an Advanced Football Training Programme, in partnership with Malaysian counterpart, Astro Malaysia

In total, over 100 F4L players were given a chance to play in this marque event at one of Tacloban's premier sporting venues. You can watch a special event video here or read the complete write up here.

FundLife International Signs Partnership with the Department of Education!

Off-the-field, there were also significant developments, as FundLife signed an MOU with DepEd to work with underfunded schools in Region 8. The partnership with DepEd will allow FundLife to deliver its highly specialized and award-winning Football for Life (F4L) programme across public schools in Leyte. F4L is an  informal and experiential learning programme that combines football and positive values formation to support junior high-school students to achieve both football and education excellence. It is completely unique, wherein it uses football as a tool for sporting, and for personal and educational development. You can read the full article here.

FundLife International Joins AYLA-Leyte for Project Bisog!

FundLife International joins AYLA-PH Leyte’s Project Bisog in promoting awareness in HIV infection and prevention thru an educational football session last June 10, 2017 in Brgy. 97 covered court. Project Bisog is a community-based, family-oriented health program promoting adolescent sexual and reproductive health focusing on HIV prevention.

FundLife International helped establish AYLA-PH Leyte thru its Going Places program last May 2016. The program capacitated the pioneering members of the local chapter through various activities such as community immersions, skills development workshop, and advocacy setting sessions. Since its establishment, FundLife continues to support AYLA-PH Leyte by linking the organization to various opportunities and providing assistance to its programs, especially Project Bisog. ~

These are just some of the highlights in recent months as we continue to work with over 500 children each week. Ahead of us lies challenging and exciting times as we continue to develop and deliver our curriculum across public schools.

We look forward to sending you the next update in a few months and thank you once again for your continued support and trust!
