Hurricane Harvey: Tracking our impact

COHI has been working hard to follow up with the Hurricane Harvey cash grant recipients that YOU supported in the aftermath of the hurricane's devastation. We are tracking our impact so that we can learn more about how the evacuees were helped and how they experienced the cash grant process with COHI. Some of what we've heard so far through our surveys:

"We really appreciated the one-on-one help. It should be replicated."

"You did a wonderful job for us; we are back in Beaumont now. Thank you for getting what we needed for our children ASAP."

"I really needed the financial assistance right away, and your process worked."

79% of families spent their cash grants on gas, tires, and transportation. 69% of them used their cash grants for food. 34% bought medicine. 14% of families used it for childcare costs. 27% of people used the money for rent. 14% bought clothes. And 7% of the families used the cash grants for school, supplies, or extra things for their children.

We are also hearing from many families that their financial needs continue and we are considering how we might support them in a more long term way.

We will be closing this project soon, but we wanted to reach out again and let you know that a big difference was made in the lives of over a thousand people in Texas. Thank you again for your support!

In gratitude,

Leah

Hope for a New Birth Center in 2018!

COHI is super excited to be continuing our work in Puerto Rico through support of CentroMAM, a local and community-based organization of midwives and maternal health professionals on the island. CentroMam is doing so much to help rebuild their community and continue doing the work of supporting moms and babies in hard places.

We are in the beginning phases of helping them create a birth center sustainability plan in 2018! We hope to help them build a sustainable community center so that they have the skills and tools available to support women, babies, and their communities in the face of natural disasters.

We have committed funding to CentroMAM for the rest of the year. In addition, we are trying to procure in kind gifts and supplies to fulfill their wish of building a rain catchment system and solar panels on the new birth center.

COHI is also providing a volunteer to help with logistics, administration, and fundraising for their sustainability plan.

We have lots to do and we couldn’t do it without supporters like you, so thank you!

Best,

Leah

Syria still needs our help

The reports from Syria continue to arrive from our friends and partners in the area of Ghouta. The heavy bombardment persists in the city and has forced women, children, and hospitals into basements.

Eastern Ghouta has been particularly affected, with five hospitals targeted by several airstrikes resulting in multiple deaths of medical personnel and civilians.

Right now we are working on distributing food items (cooked meals and bread) to the most vulnerable. Drugs, medical equipment, and any medical relief is being hindered by the bombings, so we are focusing on the most urgent needs of food and water while we wait for the violence to end so we can bring the essential medical assistance.

Please join us in helping the people of Ghouta!

Thank you,

Leah
