100 things we love about the south side of Chicago

As Global Girls prepares to bring girls from Grenada to Chicago, we are loving up our awesome city and our wonderful south side community. Part of the reason for our super-sized dosage of adoration is the horrible reputation our part of the city has garnered due to a few bad, or shall we say, wayward apples who've, granted, done some horrendous things. Still, the community that we know, and love also has lovely homes with manicured lawns, neighbors who speak to one another, areas where children ride their bikes on the sidewalk and those oh so Fresh summer block parties are still a regular July and August feature.

Some of the Grenada girls heard about Chicago's south side and began to wonder if they would be safe. We have posted a video and are encouraging our neighbors, friends, community businesses, schools and other organizations like us to tell us or tweet something they love about the south side and we'll put it all into a video that we can share here and with our girls in Grenada, India and Kenya.

The Grenada girls will spend a week in Chicago the first week in August. All of us are so very excited. Thanks to your support, this is a dream trip come true for the girls. We'll post pictures, and, if you're in Chicago, you can come and see the girls perform with our Chicago Globes at a show or two. Summertime is the best time to visit Chicago. We won’t confine them to the south side. They’ll tour this awesome city, perform in four schools and two colleges and talk with lots of girls not only about Grenada, but the dreams they share with and for all girls.

Check out the video our girls prepared for a small grant to help with production costs. We begin our CAN TV Chicago weekly call in show and will feature the video in each program during the 13-week run. Below are pictures from our spring finale at our south side home, the Global Studio.

Global Girls supports students speaking up for change!

Our youth stand side by side with youth all over the country speaking out against antiquated gun laws. They are writing letters to legistators, writing to newspapers, talking with their parents and talking to their peers. In our community here in Chicago, gun violence has become commonplace. We don't accept it, but too often our voices are silenced and our cries go unheard. We welcome any and all attention to and protests against guns. We all want safe communities for our children in school, on the playground, on the bus, walking home or on their very own porch.

The youth in our after school programs will follow their actions closely and participate in local activities here in Chicago. We are organizing other youth to participate in the National School Walkout March 14 and the March for Our lives on March 24. YOUTH POWER!!!

Global Girls returns to Grenada

Thanks to your donations, Global Girls team members will return to Grenada in March to set things in motion for five Grenadian girls to come to Chicago in July, 2018. We are super excited to report that our program has progressed to this point. Picutres of Ryonn Gloster in Chicago and updates on travel arrangements will soon follow.

In the meantime, the girls in Chicago are preparing for the visit by contacting schools so that the girls can attend a Chicago school for a day as Chicago girls did while they were in Grenada. We are also working with our University of Illilios Chicago partner to secure time for the girls to visit the campus and present their performance before faculty and students.

Our Grenada partnership will be ongoing even after the girls leave Chicago through letters and social media. A committee of Chicago and Grenada youth and adults are working on a return visit to Grenada and visits to neighoboring island partners for the Chicago Global Girls. We will establish Global Girls partnerships throughout the Caribbean islands by 2020.
