Our Thank You to YOU.

                                                              SEASONS GREETINGS

Hello all,

Our children send a big hello and wave of thanks for your amazing support over this year. A year where we have triumphed over adversities, cried for happiness and sadness and were able to welcomed more children in need.

We have laughed out loud with many of our volunteers who make our children's days so wonderful knowing that they are not forgotten and we continue to thank those whose caring has shown in the form of a donation and help.

If I could, I would, personally like to have met and thanked everyone who travels on this most amazing journey with us. It is you who makes a difference to so many lives, and you are the reason that our children will continue to grow and learn so that they themselves will be able to one day make a difference to the lives of so many others.

Special thank you for your donation, be it big or small, it all counts just the same and we are thankful for every cent. Thank you to our amazing monthly donors who have taken the commitment to adopt a child into their hearts, your sponsorship literally changes a life.

To the volunteers that leave their family and friends and travel to be with us at Roko 20 Academy the home you had whilst you were with us, and waits for your return; thank you.

Last but never least, to the staff at Roko 20 Academy. You work tirelessly for our children and greet our volunteers, working side by side with them and giving that extra bit of yourselves for those children who you know were forgotten.

'We have come from far' ...  we have because we share the same vision for our children. To give more than hope, to give a future, to make a difference.

SEASONS GREETINGS to you all, from our family to your family and friends. May the world give you peace, great joy of living, and great love for others.

Warmly,

Jennifer Hughes-Bystrom

A Great Success Story

Beyonce
Beyonce

Mama Beyonce

Beyonce joined Roko 20 in December 2014 aged 3 years old. Beyonce thrived immediately in Roko 20’s environment and continues to do so.

Mama Beyonce works hard to improve her living conditions but with limited resources. We discussed with her how we could assist with a suitable project.

Mama Beyonce lives in a populated area close to an area of land where matatu (minibus) drivers bring their vehicles to be washed. She came up with the idea of setting up a stall selling chips (french fries) to the bus drivers.

In return for providing her with start-up materials, Mama Beyonce volunteered her time and worked at Roko 20 helping out in the kitchen and garden for 3 days.

Mama Beyonce’s young start-up business is already a success. She is bringing in enough income to survive and has already expanded the business and now sells coffee.

We will further assist her with a small loan to buy produce in bulk wholesale. This will enable her to sell small quantities of cooking oil in her stall. She is always thinking about ways in which to expand her business.

Because of your support women like Mama Beyonce now have hope and a future for herself and her daughter.

We are always looking for ways to improve the lives of our children by assisting their parents/guardians out of poverty with projects suited to them. This is yet another one of our success stories.

Thank you for helping us to improve the lives of our children and their families.

To help us keep supporting the families of our children please see our Global Giving page below.

We have so many reasons to be grateful!

Reasons to be grateful

Dear Friends,

Thanks to you and your support we are now able to sponsor 43 pupils with an education, food, clothing, books and health care for free. We currently have 98 students, the majority of our pupils have parents who can afford to pay minimal school fees. Our fee is small so as not to exclude many within the community. In addition, we continue to help even more of our pupils' families become financially self-sufficient with various income generating projects.  Without you, we simply would not be able to have such a positive impact on these children's lives.  Asante Sana!  (Thank You)

Our work is not simply about educating orphans and the most disadvantaged children, it's also about enabling the family/guardians to become financially self-sufficient, with various small income generating projects, tackling the issues of empowerment and family self-sufficiency.

Here's a sample of one of our success stories:

Martha is 90 years old.  Since the death of one of her daughters and another having a mental illness, she is struggling to raise 6 great grandchildren alone.  We sponsor four of these children.  Despite her age, Martha is still agile and works hard tending to her small piece of land harvesting maize, beans, bananas and sweet potatoes.  Last year we donated a goat to Martha as part of our Goat Project enabling her to bring in an income through the sale of milk.  In March 2016 the goat gave birth to a female kid which is soon to be returned and passed to another family in need.

Martha is also a member of our Elderly Ladies Group.  This group consists of 40 ladies, all over the age of 70, who come to the school each month to have lunch and socialize, do some gentle exercise and sing songs.  They also weave traditional baskets, called Kiondos, which are made from sisal and wool.  We sell these baskets to visitors and volunteers and all the proceeds go directly to each lady which supplements their income. (less 10% which goes into a 'pot' which helps to pay for medical expenses or wool for those who are unable to buy it).

I wish you could all witness the huge impact your continued support makes in the lives of the families we are privileged to serve and empower.

Thank You so much,

Jennifer Hughes Bystrom
