Mission

YOUTH FOR CHRIST - GENERAL OVERVIEW The NGO Youth for Christ in Montevideo, Uruguay. Youth for Christ is an autonomous, non-profit organization. Since it began 40 years ago, Youth for Christ has worked actively to come along side marginalized population in Uruguay through formal programs. Our action is oriented primarily toward children, adolescents, young people and their families on three levels of intervention: - Personal (seeking holistic development) - Within the family and community (work to strengthen families, develop local networks, and encourage participation) - Political and structural (participate in constructing Social Policies and effective methods of intervention) In 1989, we began to work formally with the State and formed the Civil Society Organization Youth for Christ, Uruguay. Since then we have operated collectively with State organisms, International Organisms, and a wide variety of NGOs (non-government organizations) that work in the country. In Youth for Christ we run politically as a civil society organization. The General Assembly of partners is the sovereign body, which appoints a Board of Directors. This Board operates on an honorary basis and has a predetermined term of service. Youth for Christ works with a clear north, challenging but possible with Jesus Christ, which we express with simplicity in our mission: - Promote a culture in tune with the gospel and its values of justice, peace, solidarity, tolerance, love, and respect for the diversity. - For part of the Youth for Christ International family, adhering to the shared vision and mission of the organization.

Programs

EDUCATIONAL AND WORK PROGRAMAS The objective of this program is to come along side people with fewer possibilities for work and educational training, and through these build together opportunities for inclusion. Currently, we carry out 12 projects with the State which include groups between 15 and 35 participants with different life situations, but all of our beneficiaries come from situations of social vulnerability. Our work team includes approximately 50 people of different ages and professions, although the varies widely depending on which projects are running at the specific moment. COMMUNITY PROGRAMS In our community programs we look to serve children and adolescents from our community along with their families. Our activities include a wide spectrum of the population: from babies in their mothers wombs that participate in the childhood development center, to adolescents in the Youth Center. All of them share a difficult socioeconomic context, often described as social risk. These programs include two youth centers, two childhood development centers, and two programs that promote youth civil engagement. CLAVES As part of Youth for Christ's community development work, the CLAVES Program began in 1995. This program looks to join efforts for the prevention of mistreatment and the promotion of fair and caring interactions within the culture at large. CLAVES does so by training those who work directly with children and adolescents, producing materials, and carrying out public awareness campaigns. The CLAVES Program seeks to spread awareness and provide training, working with and for children, adolescents, families, teachers, and professionals. It also endeavors to generate knowledge, create teaching tools, and open up spaces for participation, leadership, and political and social advocacy. The program has developed methods of intervention that have been implemented and recognized in Latin America and several European countries. While recognizing the importance of addressing structural and risk factors of violence directly, CLAVES seeks to confront violence by focusing on the promotion of healthy interactions to prevent mistreatment, taking a positive stance. CLAVES looks to identify and promote protective factors and individual strengths that allow children to confront violence in different situations. The conceptual framework for this work is based on Christian anthropology, promotion of holistic health, value of human rights, gender inclusion, resilience, and a prevention-focused approach. With these foundational concepts, an interdisciplinary technical team has designed and published creative and participatory resources. These play-oriented materials allow children, adolescents, families and communities to develop skills for the prevention of interpersonal violence and the promotion of respectful and kind interactions using participatory methods. "EL RETONO" RETREAT CENTER El Retono is peaceful, comfortable, safe place a few minutes from Montevideo where schools, churches, organizations or individuals can hold meetings, camps, birthdays, weddings and events.
