For more than 20 years, we have worked to reduce the cycle of extreme poverty and social exclusion by ensuring that people facing the greatest barriers have access to high-quality healthcare, protection, nutrition, shelter, and comprehensive support. We believe that every child deserves the opportunity to grow in a safe and loving environment, and that every older adult deserves to age with dignity, respect, and care. Today, Fundacion Proyecto Union provides comprehensive services to hundreds of vulnerable individuals and their families each year. We currently care for more than 200 children with disabilities and complex medical conditions, including over 100 children under the protection of the Colombian Institute for Family Welfare (ICBF) whose rights have been violated or who have been removed from unsafe environments. We also support more than 200 children living with their families through multidisciplinary medical, therapeutic, and psychosocial services, accompany more than 140 family caregivers, provide temporary housing for children undergoing cancer treatment and their caregivers, and serve daily meals to approximately 180 older adults experiencing homelessness. Across all our programs, we deliver more than 6,000 comprehensive services each year. Our work with children is built on the understanding that medical care alone is not enough. Many of the children we serve live with severe disabilities, chronic illnesses, or complex medical conditions while also facing poverty, family instability, or limited access to specialized healthcare. Without timely intervention, these barriers can significantly affect their health, development, and quality of life. Through our Protection Program, we provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care for children and adolescents with disabilities and complex medical conditions who are under the protection of ICBF. Beyond meeting their healthcare needs, we create safe, nurturing environments where children receive therapeutic services, educational support, emotional care, and opportunities to develop their full potential while their rights are restored. Our Home Away From Home Program welcomes children with cancer and other complex illnesses, along with their caregivers, who travel from rural Colombia and neighboring countries to Bogota seeking life-saving specialized treatment. Many families arrive with no financial resources, no relatives in the city, and nowhere to stay. We provide safe accommodation, meals, transportation support, and emotional accompaniment so families can focus on their child's recovery rather than their daily survival. Through our Vida Program, we support children whose access to rehabilitation services and medical specialists has been delayed or interrupted due to barriers within the healthcare system. Our multidisciplinary team helps families navigate these challenges, ensuring children receive timely therapies and specialized care that promote healthy development and prevent long-term complications. Our Day Care Program provides specialized daytime care for children with disabilities and complex conditions, allowing parents and caregivers-many of whom have had to leave the workforce because of caregiving responsibilities-to return to work or continue their education while knowing their children are receiving professional, compassionate care. Our commitment to dignity extends beyond childhood. We also serve older adults experiencing homelessness, one of Colombia's most invisible and underserved populations. Many have no family support, no stable income, and limited access to food, healthcare, or safe shelter. Through Maria es mi Madre Community Dining Center, we provide nutritious breakfasts and lunches every day, creating not only access to food but also a welcoming community where older adults are treated with respect and compassion. Through Casa de la Esperanza, our overnight shelter, we offer a safe place to sleep, basic care, and human connection for older adults living on the streets. Everything we do is guided by a holistic, person-centered approach. We recognize that poverty is multidimensional and cannot be addressed through isolated interventions. By combining healthcare, nutrition, psychosocial support, protection, education, shelter, and caregiver strengthening, we help children and older adults build healthier, safer, and more dignified lives. Our mission is not simply to provide services-it is to ensure that children and older adults who have been overlooked by society are given the opportunity to thrive, participate fully in their communities, and build a future filled with hope.
