Specifically, the Montreal SPCA provides essential services to protect and improve animal lives while supporting their guardians. It shelters cats, dogs, small mammals, and sometimes wildlife, rehoming them after medical treatment and behavioural assessment. Animals needing special care-such as those too young, ill, or requiring socialization-are placed in foster families, while the Mary Phelan Neonatal Program offers intensive round-the-clock care to orphaned kittens. Veterinary services include spay/neuter for adopted and community animals, treatment of illness and injury, and behavioural support. The SPCA helps the public with lost and found services and addresses cruelty through special constables and animal protection officers, supported by a 24/7 call centre. Specialized programs include palliative care fostering, barn cat placements, trap-neuter-release to reduce stray populations, a pet food bank for families in need, and temporary sheltering for animals whose guardians face crises such as domestic violence or social reintegration. The organization also partners with community centres to deliver training, and plays a leading advocacy role on a number of issues such as sterilization, factory farming, fur farms, access to animal-friendly housing, etc, while raising awareness to prevent neglect and cruelty.
