Wonderfolk is a social impact mentorship organization rooted in leadership development and international travel for brilliant lower-income and BIPOC highschoolers. Our mission is to develop diverse young leaders through a blend of leadership opportunities that amplify their agency, impact their community, and shape their future. Our approach, which includes accelerated leadership development through mentorship, travel, and local civic engagement experiences, is specifically designed to bridge the opportunity gap for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) teenagers and their communities. Our work is unique. Since 2015, we have been steadfast in our mission to remove barriers to access and limiting beliefs. We empower historically marginalized students, helping them find their voice through power building, activism, mental and emotional health support, creative expression, environmental conservationism, and community engagement. Our approach operates in spaces where low-income and BIPOC communities lack access and representation To accomplish our goal of dismantling systemic barriers and providing opportunities for leadership advancement for underserved youth in Portland, we have established three program pillars: 1. Unity Through Arts: Students discover how art can drive social change and reshape narratives. Projects: digital media, murals, cultural art workshops, art as self-care, and documentary films. 2. Our Naturehood: Students reconnect with local nature, which is often severed due to environmental racism. Projects: advocacy, habitat/trail restoration, exploratory hike workshops, and rewilding urban spaces. 3. Global Leadership: Students journey to Costa Rica, collaborating with community stakeholders on education and conservation projects that leave a lasting, sustainable impact. 4. Alumni Program (Coming Soon): This program offers ongoing education and career readiness support for students who have completed their first-year programming and "graduated" from their cohort. Activities: opportunities for internships and job shadowing, meaningful volunteer experiences, and a series of workshops covering college applications, resume building, and interview preparation. Designed to equip alumni with the skills and connections they need for their next steps, the program ensures continued guidance as they transition into higher education and the workforce.
