We are a women-led South African organisation working where justice, health and protection meet, and we strengthen the coordination between police, prosecutors, courts, health services and social development so that support arrives when and where it is needed. The problem we solve South Africa has some of the strongest laws and policies on gender-based violence in the world. The services exist. The mandates exist. What breaks is the handover between them. A woman reports violence to the police, and her case stalls before it reaches the prosecutor. She is referred for medical care, and social services never hear of her. Information is lost as it moves between institutions, and by the time a case reaches court it is often incomplete and struck from the court roll for want of clarity rather than merit. Each part of the system does its job, and she still falls through the spaces in between. These failures fall hardest on marginalised and underserved women: women living in poverty, women in rural areas, and women whose lives are shaped by the intersection of violence, poverty and substance use. They are the women most likely to need every service at once, and the least likely to be followed through all of them. How we work STAND works in the hard middle ground between policy and practice. We work inside the institutions that already exist, with the people who already hold the mandates, and we design for how those systems actually operate. Our work spans gender-responsive justice and GBV systems strengthening, evidence-informed responses to substance-related harms, multi-sector coordination, and alternatives to incarceration. Every programme is grounded in evidence, built for real institutions, and centred on the dignity of the people it serves. Our flagship: Trace Her Case, Track Her Justice Our flagship model follows a survivor’s case across every institution that touches it, from first report through health, social services, policing and the courts, so that no handover becomes a dead end. Its working pilot, the Red Dot Process, was designed by STAND in collaboration with Overstrand Municipality and the Overberg Violence Prevention Unit, with the support of the DG Murray Trust. It runs on the municipality’s existing Citizen App, assigns each case a non-identifying reference number to protect the survivor’s privacy, and maps every handover across law enforcement, the National Prosecuting Authority, the Department of Justice, health, social development and child protection services. It went live on 24 August 2026, and dispatched its first case to the South African Police Service three days later. A community layer of 31 trained GBV ambassadors supports survivors on the ground. The system works. Phase 1 is built and proven. Phase 2, the operational rollout across the district, now awaits funding, at the time of year when the risk of gender-based violence is highest. What we have achieved Since 2018, STAND has trained more than 500 officials, practitioners and caregivers across health, justice, policing and community sectors, and reached more than 700 women, young people and community members directly. We have trained 29 INTERPOL officers from 11 SADC member states, led the advocacy that secured the National Department of Health’s conditional endorsement of the Pregnancy and Substance Use Toolkit for public-sector maternity and primary healthcare, and were selected as South Africa’s flagship country story for the Love Alliance portfolio, funded by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We have presented at the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs and at Harm Reduction International, and have received and managed more than R16.9 million in donor funding.
