A look at our impact in 2023

Mar 1, 2024   The power of the GlobalGiving community shined in 2023 as an example of what is possible when generosity and humanity come first. Amid the formidable challenges of war, extreme poverty, and entrenched inequality, everyday giving is declining. Yet, the GlobalGiving community raised more than $112M for 8,459 charitable projects in 168 countries in 2023. The world’s largest music venue—the Great Strahov Stadium in Prague—would be needed to hold the 219,236 generous people who gave.... Read more

A look at our impact in 2022

Mar 15, 2023   The GlobalGiving community was challenged like never before in 2022. We saw war, famine, floods, and financial and political strife put pressure on people around the globe. But we also saw our community show up like never before. Thank you.  Two weeks before Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine, our partners’ requests for support prompted us to launch the GlobalGiving Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund. Transformative STEM stories of 3,960 students across 5 countries

Dec 13, 2022   As the weather turns colder here in Belgium and the lights look just that little bit brighter, it’s a moment where we feel a particular sense of wonder and reflection. Taking stock of all the transformative stories that have been exchanged this past year through our work reminds us of the words of Maya Angelou: Everybody is worth everything. You're powering the response to overlooked crises

Aug 11, 2022   Read a personal essay about how donations to the Flex Fund are powering our new urgent crisis initiative. Ten years ago, I met a doctor I will never forget. He managed a small, cluttered medical clinic on a dirt road in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. I worked with communities there as part of a United Nations Peacekeeping mission. When a rebel group called M23 took over the Congolese city of Goma, they terrorized, killed, and raped innocent civilians. The doctor provided medical.... Read more

A look at our impact in 2021

Mar 10, 2022   2021 was a year of highs and lows. It was a year that required collective action—and reflection. Just as new vaccines gave us hope, new coronavirus variants took it away, stretching one of the worst pandemics in history into a second deadly year. Globally, a mere 3% of people in low-income countries were vaccinated with at least one dose, compared to 65% of people in rich countries. With broken social systems exposed in stark ways, you stood up for a better world, a.... Read more

During that festival, our kids will be inviting adults to play throughout the day, participate in all of the talks and then give back a presentation to the general audience, as well as the City Mayor and the head of the local University on their vision of how adults include them- or.... Coding with Pro's

Jul 14, 2016   In El Desafío we work on Youth Development and all of our activities seek to solve the problems they face by providing them with necessary life- skills. Through coding we seek to develop critical and logical thinking as well as frustration management. During this period parents were invited to participate in one class so that participants could show them what they had been working on and teach them how to communicate with computers. Also, a few weeks ago, we were invited to visit a.... Read more

Coding into a new horizon

Apr 20, 2016   2016 Started with many exciting plans as the kids signed in for a new opportunity to start coding their future. We had some classes already and before starting with the basics by using scratch, the first thing was to understand how we talk to computers. We had some funny games and lots of laughter for this. For the following months we plan to further develop technical skills and for that some “Secret Missions” where assigned for each kid to explore some of the functions of the.... Read more

2015 Closing Ceremony - 2016 Plans

Jan 29, 2016   2015 was an amazing and challenging year. It was our first time teaching kids to code using what our friends from Harvard University taught us during their visit in 2014. It was a great experience where participants learnt the basis of coding and ended up coding their own simple website while also gaining countless of other life skills that will remain with them as they grow up. We have more exiting ideas for the 2016 version of the Coding program based on our learnings and insights from.... Read more

Going wild online

Oct 30, 2015   Overcoming challenges is what makes us strong, after a first successful stage with scratch (coding platform) and the basics of coding through games, a new milestone was set after participants faced a more “real” coding platform and learnt how to code using Processing.JS. Though we had our initial doubts on how they would react with this new platform, we were indeed surprised on their reactions, as they felt as more “professional” programmers and they’ve created.... New Challenge

Aug 5, 2015   Almost half of the year has gone by and we  the kids participating on the Code your future program are closing a stage and getting ready to start a new challenge. The stage they will be closing during the next couple of weeks is the use of Scratch- a kids friendly coding platform- that was the first step to understanding what coding is about in a fun and playful way. They will code a whole game/ application in teams and then will be their own judges in terms of how well designed and coded.... Read more

Code your future

May 11, 2015   As we told you in our previous reports, during the last time of 2014 we were focused on planning the coding program that we developed thanks to the knowledge shared by our friends at Harvard University and the Digital Literacy Program. Coding is a completely new thing for our kids, so the first thing they needed to understand that coding is just another way of communicating, in this case, communicating with a computer so that it can follow our instructions. After going through some dynamics, to.... Read more

Feb 9, 2015   2014 was a great year, besides the cool activities that the kids were able to do through the different classes, we got amazing results in terms of the objectives that we pursue. We saw significant changes on how the participants allow themselves to think different from the rest of the group and feel comfortable defending their point of view. Learning through play

Sep 25, 2019   Technology has become the answer to many of our everyday questions, and for the participants, it is also the answer on how to prepare the afternoon snack, while choosing between hot chocolate or tea, cereals or sandwiches- all through algoritms and apps.  The activity meant lots of programing steps, and of course not getting it right the first time, so lots of patience and logical thinking was required, both skills that we consider fundamental for life.  During all this time, kids have.... Coding for climate change

Jul 1, 2019   As the year unfolds a new group of participants starts to learn about coding and developing a passion for it, maybe the most important part is  to answer the question How can technology help us solve our problems?  With that question in mind and after inspiring the participants with a video on climate change, they made a brainstorming session and created a system to water plants and to measure the humidity in the soil for a good use of water. It is a first step, but a question....

They have developed critical thinking and gained self- steem on the process. We know that this personal abilities will allow them to grow up as models.... Read more

Analyzing the objectives we settled, we realized that the participants allow themselves to think different from the rest of the group and feel comfortable defending their point of view. They have developed critical thinking and gained self- steem on the process. Thinking of 2015, we hosted a team of Harvard students in Rosario to work on a coding program as a.... Read more

April- May 2014

May 22, 2014   It’s been two months since we started working again on the e-learning program and the results so far have been really interesting.  For the first time the kids where challenged to make a presentation on something that they had developed in groups. They had worked on the “music” issue for a month and it was time to show the results. So one group created a video where they featured the importance and relationship between music and soccer, two of their passions. Another group.... Read more

Q3 2013 - Moving on

Oct 28, 2013   Our last quarter has been full of challenges. We had to say goodbye to our program coordinator since he is moving abroad seeking for new adventures, and of course the children were sad to see him go. But as always someone new comes full of new energy and enthusiasm. Our new program coordinator brought new ideas and inspired the kids to  innovate and go beyond their limits. The result was a blog in where all children create, edit and produce content about their reality and their social.... Read more

E-learning. 2nd Quarter 2012

Aug 10, 2012   In this update about the e-learning program I can’t tell you too many new things about the content of the program itself; it is going very well. Our professor Julieta got assistance from a very dedicated young volunteer – and digital native – Agustin, who is giving her a hand with the latest tech news. Once a week he shares the funniest YouTube videos with the children which made him already a very popular ‘profe’. As I mentioned in the last update, we rented a new.... Read more

E-learning. 1st Quarter 2012

May 15, 2012   Last March we kicked off the activities in our new space. We rented a warehouse located between the two neighborhoods we are working with and turning it into 190sqm of happiness and social innovation. Currently we are renovating our place, so it’s still a bit empty, but the children are back and fill the space with laughter. They really love it and it already feels like a second home. Besides our home, we have been renovating the programs. A key element for (social) innovation is to always.... Read more

Update 2nd Quarter 2011

Aug 12, 2011   It's winter in Argentina. Normally this means that the attendance of the kids goes down, because of the cold, or because after a shower or storm the roads turn into mud and it's almost impossible to get to the school where we work. Fortunately the winter is not that cold, and the children like the e-learning program a lot, so the attendance is steady. We have divided the children in two groups. The younger ones get classes on the basics of computing and in a very playful way they get used to.... Read more

Update 1st quarter 2011

May 4, 2011   After the summer break in Argentina we started our classes again last March. The children really love to attend the e-learning program and they naturally embrace new technology. Last year we have been working on teaching them the basics of computing and it has been amazing to see how easy they adopt the digital environment. Connecting to the children is with this program is easy, but a bigger challenge is the children’s illiteracy. Even though they go to school many children still have big.... Read more
