Ethos is a human-centered mindset and approach to help us all make more confident decisions with integrity. Rather than focusing on shared values and beliefs, Ethos is centered on a set of grounding principles and shared behaviors that can lead us to more effective and creative resolutions.
Prompted by a series of dilemmas, GlobalGiving has recently reflected upon the concept of neutrality. Platforms like ours (and many others) are finding themselves stuck in what we called the Neutrality Paradox. We couldn’t not make decisions about who was on and who was off. We had to address the dilemmas.
We’ve learned that, at best, neutrality is a misguided principle that has proved inadequate through experience. At worst, it can function as a blunt tool by those looking to avoid accountability and controversy. Most importantly, neutrality does not adequately reflect the human values embedded in our mission, culture, or community.
There had to be a better way to make decisions.
We started asking questions—to our peers and partners, and to ourselves. We worked with more than 100 stakeholders over 18 months, through research, convenings, and design sprints, to develop the Ethos Principles and Process.
We believe this approach will enable us to be in service of humanity and social innovation and help us make confident decisions with integrity.
We’re grateful to the many peers and partners who’ve supported this journey, including:
