The aim of the project is to assist in reducing school dropout rates of girl students and improve education and health by supporting the construction of girl friendly toilets (along with water and sanitation facilities) and providing menstrual hygiene management training and support in the schools of Nepal.
Many schools do not have proper toilet and related water & sanitation facilities, students wander out into the forest (or open field) to relieve themselves. Even in schools with existing toilet, basic water & sanitation facility is lacking, resulting in the dirty and unhealthy situation. This gives rise to various diseases. Additionally, girl students (when they reach the age of puberty) do not come to class during their monthly menstruation period, and gradually drop-out from school.
The project will develop basic infrastructures (separate girl friendly toilet which has provision to dispose sanitary pads, water & sanitation facilities), will provide menstruation hygiene management training, will support washable re-useable sanitary pad to the girl students from low income families, will train local women on making washable re-useable sanitary pad. These supports will help girl students attend school in a comfortable and supportive environment during their menstruation time.
The project will work towards positive change regarding menstruation issues in Nepalese society. Menstruation related support will lead to increase class attendance and improve girl education. More importantly, the project will make girls conscious about hygiene factors which can often get ignored during menstruation time. On a broader level, the program activities will be a boost to improve education and health.
