Pass Love Charity Foundation's Dandelion Village Library Program aims to provide rural children in China access to quality and developmentally appropriate reading material that will inspire them to follow their dreams and achieve their potential. PLCF achieves this goal by establishing library rooms full of carefully selected books along with engaging activities and ongoing teacher support.
It was recently estimated that roughly 8 million rural children in China have no access to reading materials other than text books. Reading is cornerstone of education, but poverty has put these children at a significant disadvantage. Lack of quality and developmentally appropriate reading materials negatively impacts their academic performance and their motivation to learn. In the long run, it limits their opportunity to fair education.
PLCF's Dandelion Village Library Program is a low-cost, sustainable and scale-able model that follows four principle guidelines: select quality and developmentally appropriate reading material, engage students in reading with enrichment activities using library materials, provide ongoing teacher support to integrate library material into reading instruction, and integrate technologies to foster an online community.
Reading is fundamental to a child's future; it is the corner stone of education. Providing developmentally appropriate reading materials to rural children in China will give them a chance to fair education, add to their viability in a competitive world and encourage them to inspire others with their experiences, and in turn help them become responsible citizens
