Violence, child abuse, rape, youth suicide and crime have increased in India. Records from Government of India indicate in 2011, 33,387 juveniles ages 7-18 years were arrested, of which 2,083 were from Tamil Nadu. Behavioral science has researched the cyclic nature of violence in home, family breakdown and family poverty. With 27 years experience working with victims of such situations, SERFAC will continue working to minimize all forms of violence by education and counseling
Poverty, violence and family breakdown are encapsulated in one problem. Dealing with this problem demands one entry point, identifying precipitating factors, tracing their source, ramifications and the impact this three dimensional problem and their consequences on children, youth, family, home and institution is the major crisis facing humanity
A base line will be established by assessing safety conditions of 200 children in 5 creches, 200 youth in 5 juvenile institutions, 400 parents of victims and 100 care givers in Chennai and Kanchipuram. Intervention counseling for children and youth will be held at frequent intervals and parents/care givers will be trained for one year in helping skills, identifying signs of abuse and wide range of protection areas. Behavior changes in all groups will be monitored monthly for one year
Long term impacts, some of which are: Responsible parenthood, less family breakdown, violence, crime and poverty. Understanding youth and children, family life education, identifying signs of possible abuse, giving children the skills they need to protect themselves. Ability to cope with pressure that might otherwise cause themselves and their children harm. Safety in homes and money management, self-help and building self- confidence. Problem solving skills and early intervention when in need
