Father Paul Satkunanayagam SJ and his associates have formulated a 3-step plan to effectively respond to the needs of the people of Batticaloa.
Large refugee settlements in Batticaloa and nearby Manresa in the countryside are currently each assisting over 2000 people displaced by the tsunami. There are other such centers at all the Batticaloa schools as well as temples, mosques and churches.
1. Respond immediately to the emergency. 2. Gradually break up these large settlements to prevent the spread of disease. People will be moved back to smaller settlements. 3. Resettlement of the people in their home communities.
This project will meet the immediate need for shelter while working to prevent disease. Eventual resettlement will allow people to rebuild their communities and cope with the pscyhological trauma of the disaster.
This project has provided additional documentation in a Microsoft Word file (projdoc.doc).
