Project Report | Dec 3, 2014
Georgia the Koala Joey

By Michelle Burgum | Donor Relations Officer

Georgie the Koala Joey

Age: 7 months  Sex: Female  Weight: 440gms

Found: On a busy road in Mackay without her mother.

Transported to: The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital by an amazing family that drove over ten hours to get the best care possible for Georgie.

Veterinary Assessment: Georgie was quiet on arrival but her condition seemed good. While under anaesthesia, Dr Amber assessed her further and determined that she was roughly seven to eight months old and at an age where she would have just been emerging from her mums pouch to ride on her back. Dr Amber also scheduled an x-ray to ensure she had no internal injuries which came back clear.

Treatment: Dr Amber was satisfied that Georgie was healthy and transferred her to a carer the very same day. Caring for orphaned koalas is very time consuming and is always undertaken by rehabilitators that have several years experience.

Future: Georgie will remain with her registered carer for close to a year. She will then return to the hospital for koala kindy in the pre-release aviary to prepare her for life in the wild. Her release will occur back in Mackay, close to where she was found but a safe distance from roads and other threats.

AZWH Fact: Georgies lighter colouring is distinctive to the area she resides from. Koalas from the northern populations are typically smaller and lighter in colour than their counterparts further south.
