Give a special gift this Holiday! Sponsor an underprivileged child on behalf of a loved one. You and your gift recipient will give a disadvantaged child the opportunity to attend DAKTARI Bush School for 5 days of educational activities in July 2014. If you'd like, we will send a personalized gift certificate that you can give. For donations of $175 or more (the total cost of sponsoring a child) we will also send a personalised thank you letter from the child.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Limpopo is known to be one of the poorest, least educated areas of South Africa. In schools, there are often more than 50 students per class. Only 48% of school leavers pass their Matriculation exam (graduate). Unemployment and poverty play a huge role in the destruction of the environment, with locals looking to poaching to support their families. Because safaris are privileges reserved for the middle-classes, locals do not understand the importance of preserving their precious environment.
How will this project solve this problem?
DAKTARI educates local, underprivileged children to care for their environment through the medium of a wildlife orphanage. If this project is funded, it will cover the cost of 32 children to attend DAKTARI for 5 days during the month of July 2014. (This is based on our group size of 8 kids per week, for the 4 full weeks during July).
Potential Long Term Impact
Teachers report significant progress in the students who attend DAKTARI, such as increased concentration, a greater motivation to speak up in class, an increase in politeness and self-esteem and a higher pass rate at the end of the year. DAKTARI students have stopped the formation of hunting parties and have called Nature Conservation to rescue wild animals near to their homes. Many of our former students are now working in eco-tourism and are seen as role models in their communities.
This project has been retired and is no longer accepting donations.
Every microproject is intended to use the donations it receives in accordance with its stated description; however, it is important to provide project leaders with the flexibility to maximize the potential benefit from the donations they receive. This means that your donation may be used as a part of the main project that supports this microproject, specifically Environmental Education for over 300 Children. In this event, the project leader is required to post an update to the microproject detailing the results and reasons behind this change.
If you or any other donor is unhappy with the way their funds have been used, he or she can reallocate their donation using the GlobalGiving guarantee.
