The Mariposa Center for Girls is a beautiful space for the girls of our community to come and learn valuable skills that will set them off on the right path to become active leaders for social change. Our facility contains space for educational, enrichment, and job training programs. Currently, we are raising funds to fund intensive, private English lessons to our advancing English speakers!
In the Dominican Republic speaking English is more useful than a high school or college degree. In fact, there are very few jobs besides available to monolingual Dominicans or Dominican-Haitians besides work as a maid. These low-paying jobs do little to help break the cycle of poverty that our girls face on a daily basis, and in order to find better jobs the girls will need to learn to speak English.
Funds raised will allow Mariposa DR Foundation to provide intensive, quality one on one English lessons for our Mariposas who are getting ready to enter the workforce!
Once the girls have the language skills they need they will be able to seek out higher-paying jobs and provide for their families. Furthermore, they will be able to teach their family members, which will allow even more members of the community to become speakers of English. These are critical steps to ending generational poverty.
