The Mariposa Center for Girls is a beautiful space for the girls of our community to come and learn valuable skills that will set them off on the right path to become active leaders for social change. Our facility contains space for educational, enrichment, and job training programs. Currently, we are raising funds to fund intensive, private English lessons to our advancing English speakers!
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
In the Dominican Republic speaking English is more useful than a high school or college degree. In fact, there are very few jobs besides available to monolingual Dominicans or Dominican-Haitians besides work as a maid. These low-paying jobs do little to help break the cycle of poverty that our girls face on a daily basis, and in order to find better jobs the girls will need to learn to speak English.
How will this project solve this problem?
Funds raised will allow Mariposa DR Foundation to provide intensive, quality one on one English lessons for our Mariposas who are getting ready to enter the workforce!
Potential Long Term Impact
Once the girls have the language skills they need they will be able to seek out higher-paying jobs and provide for their families. Furthermore, they will be able to teach their family members, which will allow even more members of the community to become speakers of English. These are critical steps to ending generational poverty.

Every microproject is intended to use the donations it receives in accordance with its stated description; however, it is important to provide project leaders with the flexibility to maximize the potential benefit from the donations they receive. This means that your donation may be used as a part of the main project that supports this microproject, specifically Unleash the Leader in a Girl. In this event, the project leader is required to post an update to the microproject detailing the results and reasons behind this change.
If you or any other donor is unhappy with the way their funds have been used, he or she can reallocate their donation using the GlobalGiving guarantee.
