Challenge

It is common for school classes in Limpopo to be larger than 60 pupils. A consequence is, the basic education of these children is suffering, and this has serious implications for the environment and their future. DAKTARI offers them the chance of getting a hands on experience with the animals that surround them. Poachers are everywhere in the local villages so that is why it is critical that DAKTARI helps change the mindsets so the environment is preserved for future generations.

Solution

DAKTARI educates and inspires a generation of underprivileged schoolchildren to become passionate about wildlife conservation through the medium of a wildlife orphanage. If this project is funded, it will cover the cost of 24 children to attend DAKTARI Bush school for 5 days of environnmental education during the month of December 2014. What would be a better gift than that for a local child? (Based on: 8 kids per week, for the 3 first weeks of December, knowing that 1 student for 5 days= $382)

Long-Term Impact

Teachers report significant progress in the students who attend DAKTARI, such as increased concentration, a greater motivation to speak up in class, an increase in politeness and self-esteem and a higher pass rate at the end of the year. DAKTARI students have stopped the formation of hunting parties and participate in the eco-club that DAKTARI gives in the local villages. Many of the students are now working in eco-tourism and are seen as role models in their communities (cf video below)
