Child drinking Dirty Water

Child drinking Dirty Water
This is the kind of water children take to schools in dirty containers, the water sources for these schools are very dirty and dangerous to drink directly without filtration. Many don't even have a drinking container and have to go all the way to the source to drink directly from there. These sources are contaminated by cows and other animals feces. That is what we are fighting for to brin in with Biosand filters to enable the children drink filtered water and reduce the rate of child death (view small | med | large | orig)

A School Pit Latrine

A School Pit Latrine
In many schools in Kumbo and Cameroon villages, you will find many schools with no pit latrine at all, and some will manage to have just these kind of latrines, which are very dangerous to children, and are uncovered. Some children fall into the latrines because of lack of protection and well constructed latrines. A School Latrine collapsed
This is another school latrine, which is very old and the school doesn't have the means of reconstructing it, students use it even when it is collapsing from the inside, and this is dangerous to the lives of the school children. Many schools have similiar and some doesn't even have because they don't have the means to construct them (view small | med | large | orig)

Replaced the Old Latrine

Replaced the Old Latrine
This is the new latrine LWDG-Cameroon constructed and replaced the old latrine above with. This is exactly what our objectives are, build a good hygienic latrines and make the environment hygienic for the children and school environment. This latrine has 5 rooms, two for boys, two for girls and one for the teachers. But because of lack of means,we would have loved to build more than five rooms to enable the urine section (view small | med | large | orig)

A Schoolchild Washes her Hand

A Schoolchild Washes her Hand
Our Hygiene and Sanitation education program that is in line with the latrine and biosand filter construction enable school children and teachers to learn how to make a hand washing tool, which is called Tippy Tap. The water clubs that are setup in every school are able to build tippy taps and have been able to teach other children how they can make them at home and for their neighbors. It helps the children keep their hands clean every time to avoid hand to mouth contamination (view small | med | large | orig)

A Health and Water Club

This is an example of a health and water club that we setup in every school. It is made up of 25 children and three teachers. LWDG-Cameroon signs an agreement with the school administration and children to make sure they are keeping the rules and keeping the filters, latrines and school environment clean and passing on the experience to other school children and to maintain the club year round. BioSand Filters for Schools

BioSand Filters for Schools
These are the biosand filters constructed to enable children drink filtered water. These filters are constructed with sand, cement and gravel, and the filtration is done by fine sand and two layers of gravel. It removes the bacterial from the contaminated water between 80- 99.999%, which changes the live, quenches taste and improve the health of the children. The filters also have storage tanks attached with faucets that allow the children to just turn it on and carry their drinking water (view small | med | large | orig)

Filter Transportation

Filter Transportation
The biosand filter team transporting filters from the construction site to the schools. It is a hard and difficult task, but because our goal is to reach out the children, even with the back roads that we have, we still do everything possible to make sure we have these filters installed in schools for the children.
