Konbit Sante will implement an ultrasound training project aimed at improving ultrasound diagnostic imaging capacity at select health centers in northern Haiti. Diagnostic tests allow clinicians to develop effective treatment plans by confirming the absence or presence of a disease or health condition. Diagnostics are either unavailable or underutilized in Haiti due to a lack of sufficiently trained staff. An estimated 15,000 patients each year will benefit from expanded imaging capacity.
Diagnostic tests are critical to the provision of quality health care. They allow clinicians to accurately assess and respond to the health needs of their patients In Haiti, less than five percent of health centers use any diagnostic tests, limiting the quality of care available to patients, particularly in poor and rural settings.
Ultrasounds are commonly used diagnostic procedures. Konbit Sante will facilitate a year-long ultrasound training for clinicians in four health centers in and around Cap-Haitien, Haiti. The training will focus on areas of high clinical demand, including obstetrics, pediatrics, and trauma. The instructors will help build scanning skills through hands-on demonstrations in the first half of the year. Following that, the instructors will monitor the application of skills and provide remote feeback.
At the end of each training module, at least 60% of learners receive a score of 24 (''acceptable") on the hands-on skills evaluation. By the end of the first year, 90% of the course participants will be able to take and interpret images accurately and 80% of course participants will use ultrasound images to inform clinical decision-making.
