Summary

This project provides two ways to help families after tropical storm Jeanne and to protect the environment: use of a solar oven by 500 families and planting of 50,000 trees.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Haiti uses an enormous amount of wood per year-- over 300,000 tons. This deforestation causes many problems including erosion, lack of water, poverty and emigration. This project provides answers for a better environment and will benefit 500 families and the whole Gonaives region.

How will this project solve this problem?

Project activities will include training for the participants, utilization of the solar oven, and planting of 50,000 trees.

Potential Long Term Impact

As a result of this project more than 500 people will gain respect for the environment and the environment will benefit. Use of the solar ovens will provide an economic benefit due to reduced fuel needs.

Project Message

If more people were aware of the degradation of the environment and were able to do something about it, we would not be touched so deeply by a simple tropical storm.
