With over 48,000 new cases of TB in Malawi each year, we fund Support Workers to educate 400,000 people to recognize the symptoms of TB and help people access free and life-saving treatment.
A lack of awareness about TB, combined with health services that are a long way from rural villages, often prevents people seeking life-saving treatment. Faced with over 48,000 new cases in Malawi in 2009 and over 8000 deaths, we will raise awareness among people and in communities, teaching them to recognize TB symptoms. We will also help them to access health services and support them through the 6 month course of treatment so they have a full and successful cure.
Our 100 TB Treatment supporters will reach over 400,000 people during 3 years, visiting families in their homes to educate them about TB and HIV/AIDS, providing counseling and referring patients for treatment, and saving lives from tuberculosis.
The project will reduce illness and deaths caused by tuberculosis. It will make people aware that TB is curable and HIV can be treated, and help them access the treatment that can save their lives.
