This project builds new sanitation facitlities on 2 schools in rural India in combination with the neccesary health and hygiene education for their 3000 students to improve the learning environment.
Children of the lowest classes benefit the most of quality education but generally their learning environment is dirty and incomplete. Drinking water is not always available and if sanitation is provided in their schools it is in a very poor state. Children are unwilling to go to the bathroom, and girls especially feel reluctant to go during their periods. Finally appaling sanitation could be another reason for children to drop out, although school could be their ticket out of poverty.
We will provide rural and slum schools with new sanitation and drinking water, train their students on hygiene and give them reproductive health education. Proper sanitation and extra counseling could mean the difference in dropping out or not.
The 2 schools that participate in this project will serve as a model for 15 more schools in this project area. Showcasing these models convinces more schools and the government that simple improvements can mean the difference in drop out rates
