SafeSIM Saves Lives in Rural Nepal

Medic Mobile will implement SafeSIM, a SIM card application for village level providers who care for local rural women. Improvements in mobile technology infrastructure and reduced cost of handsets means cell phone coverage has become quite extensive in rural Nepal. We utilize a SIM application that can be loaded onto local health workers’ handsets, allowing them to notify skilled birth attendants of upcoming deliveries, arrange transport for pregnant women and access emergency assistance.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

In rural Western Nepal, 90% of all deliveries occur in a home setting and less than 10% are attended by a Skilled Birth Attendant (SBA), resulting in high maternal mortality rate, mostly from Post-Partum Hemorrhage (PPH).

How will this project solve this problem?

One Heart World-Wide (OHW) developed the Network of Safety, an effective, replicable, sustainable training and outreach model to reduce maternal and newborn deaths in remote rural populations. Over 10 years it was able to decrease unattended home births from 85% to 20% and newborn death rates from 10% to 3%. The success of the Tibetan project has led OHW to expand into Nepal and integrating Medic Mobile's innovative, lost-cost technology will help more effectively decrease instances of PPH.

Potential Long Term Impact

OHW and Medic Mobile's joint approach will help increase the percentage of women receiving appropriate prenatal care, the proportion of deliveries attended by a SBA, and decrease maternal and infant morbidity and mortality in rural Nepal.
