Summary

EVI focuses on Haiti's Vetiver industry to support the adoption of sustainable practices, increased incomes for farmers, and application of renewable energy technologies throughout the sector.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

The Future Fuels Haiti Development Fund supports the development of environmentally responsible fuel sources that create jobs and reverse the over 98% deforestation due to charcoal production. The soil erosion due to deforestation is of particular concern for Haiti because of the yearly flooding and rains that continually devastate the country.

How will this project solve this problem?

EVI brings together local organizations, farmers, local and international financial institutions, and the private sector to provide the training, business development and support, and financing to grow the sustainable fuel industry in Haiti.

Potential Long Term Impact

The Fund’s goal over an 18-month period is to support farmers and local business to develop commercially viable sustainable fuel sources using Vetiver agricultural waste and save 30,400 trees.

Project Message

“Farmers and local businesses could generate nearly $3,000,000 in total from sale of (sustainable cooking fuel and) nearly 150,000 trees could be saved each year.”
