The Horn of Africa is experiencing one of the worst droughts in 60 years. Food is out of reach for 11 million people in the already impoverished countries, and children are the worst hit and most vulnerable to the effects of severe acute malnutrition. They need immediate nutritional support. Plumpy'nut, a vitamin enriched peanut-paste, plays a critical role by meeting these nutritional needs quickly and effectively. This project will provide enough Plumpy'nut to reach 40,000 children.
In some of the largest refugee camps in the world, malnutrition rates have risen dramatically due to the overwhelming influx of arrivals. As mothers continue to stream into Kenya and Ethiopia, escaping the drought and all the challenges of coping with high food prices, they bring with them more children in need. Many of these children (almost 40% in some camps) are suffering from the worst cases of malnutrition.
Plumpy'nut is the most effective way to treat severe acute malnutrition in emergencies. It is a peanut-paste with milk powder, sugar and vitamins/minerals, and it is easy to distribute. Plumpy'nut is given to the mothers and caregivers of children under medical supervision. Within 4-10 weeks children can make a full recovery. Edesia has been ramping up production for several weeks and is prepared to continue to respond to this crisis.
Meeting the nutritional needs of 5,000 children at this critical time means that not only are lives being saved today but they are strengthened to be more healthy and productive. A long term impact from a small packet.
