Reading Hamlets believes that reading changes lives. We strongly believe that reading illuminates the mind and the only way to read is to have access to books to read. Our mission is to improve literacy and promote reading among Nigerian children living in low income communities by providing books. We are hoping to ship our very first container of books to Nigeria through Books for Africa.
In rural communities in Nigeria, school libraries are nonexistent, books are scarce and very few can afford textbooks. The children who don't have textbooks end up sharing with peers who have. Sometimes, four children share one textbook. Access to books other than textbooks is a challenge for both primary & secondary schools children in rural towns. The public schools, which the majority patronize, are poorly equipped and manned by people who are barely literate themselves.
Funding will help us provide books to schools we are working with, to children who don't have books and to many more schools in rural areas. We are currently trying to provide books to fill empty library shelves in three schools-Ubegu primary school, Amiri Primary school, Hilltop primary school Mbubu and Erelu Adebayo which is a children's shelter in Ekiti State. We would turn unused classrooms/rooms into a library, promote reading and strengthen their love of books.
This project has the potential to significantly improve education levels in the communities served & communities can turn out responsible empowered citizens. Children will gain knowledge and knowledge gained from reading often promotes tolerance, mutual understanding, love and peace. This project would also improve literacy among school children & help them become protagonists of their own education. Literacy of one child benefits not only one but an entire family and many generations to come
This project has provided additional documentation in a DOCX file (projdoc.docx).
