DEVELOPING TODAY'S TALENT TO TELL TOMORROW'S STORIES. The Angkor Photo Workshops provide Asia's emerging talent with premier professional media training and personalized alumni support, addressing the lack of affordable and accessible options for young Asian photographers. By creating greater exposure for emerging Asian photographers and the subjects they cover, Angkor Photo encourages public discourse and greater social awareness about issues in the region.
Professional media training for photographers in Asia is prohibitively expensive. Leading workshops run as high as $2,000, exclude travel fees, and are often held in Europe or N. America. On-going support for alumni is virtually non-existent. Women also face particular challenges accessing professional training in the region. Western media outlets rely heavily on Western photographers to tell Asian stories, yet local professionals have greater access, and can produce in-depth, long-term reports.
Our Workshops are tuition-free, cover lodging, pay travel fees (funds permitting), and provide on-going alumni support. Centrally located in Cambodia, we are easily accessible by land or via regional budget airlines. In 2015, 40 photographers will be invited, based on merit of work submitted in our open call for applications, to participate in an intense 8-day training course with professional photographers who volunteer their time. Our annual average reflects a 40% female participation rate.
Over the past decade, 300 photographers from 22 nations have participated. Many have gone on to launch extremely successful international careers, bringing more Asian voices to the forefront of news the world over. Year after year, we witness alumni returning to become mentors and teachers themselves, bringing in fresh ideas that help us adapt to an ever-changing industry. Workshop results are shown on Closing Night of the Angkor Photo Festival, attended by media professionals and talent scouts.
