Turwubake ("Construct the Family"), a Global Grassroots sponsored project, is addressing economic vulnerability and domestic and sexual violence in their community in the Nyaryngenge Sector of Rwanda.
The project team, comprised of 25 local women, identify sexual and physical violence against married women and domestic workers as a critical problem in their community. This project will sensitize 50 families on issues of violence against domestic workers. Community women who are victims of violence will attend workshops in groups of 30. In its early stages, the project will also educate 15 community men identified by the project leaders and local authorities.
The project will organize trainings on gender equality for men and women, focusing on domestic workers and employers. Skill training will be offered to abused women to increase their potential for economic independence.
The project estimates that in the first year, domestic violence will decrease by 20% among targeted women and families. In addition, clothesmaking training will provide vulnerable domestic workers and married women with economic alternatives.
