5000 people, mainly women and children are suffering from chronic hunger in makuyu. The project will help 5000 family members (small scale farmers) to have acces to food and clean water.
The area where the project will be carried out is a semi-arid area, with an average rainfall of 300 to 500mm annually. The community who depends on rain fed farming suffer from food insecurity because this amount of rainfall is not able to support crops throughout the season.Women also travel an average of 3 km to fetch water from rivers. The project seeks to provide water for domestic use as well as improving food security through training on appropriate farming methods.Women will mainly benefit.
The project will facilitate sinking of shallow wells, train small scale farmers on organic farming and facilitate tree planting for environmental conservation. Training on hygiene and sanitation will also be mainstreamed.
Problem of water will be solved, food security will be achieved in a sustainable way and women will be released from the heavy burden of travelling long distances to get water. Improved living standards of 5000 men and women will be achieved.
