Project Needs and Beneficiaries

In Mexico, illiteracy has been throughout its history an issue that has never been solved. Focusing on remote communities, the education problem is even worse. Our social work takes place especially in the central region of Mexico, in states like: Michoacán, Puebla, Tlaxcala and Queretaro. We enforce our efforts to provide educational and cultural tools for illiterate people with low resources in order for them to achieve a full development in their daily lives.

Activities

The project consist in two main working periods: 1) Young volunteers are capacitated in teaching methods. 2) During the summer volunteers teach adults and work in projects proposed by the community based on the knowledge acquired during the classes.

Report 1 For Literacy Campaigns

By Camilo Arriaga - Fundraiser, June 28, 2010 02:11 PM

The second phase of our literacy campaign has begun. We have created two groups who will develop the campaign in two different regions of Mexico, Tlaxcala and Veracruz.

Tlaxcala

The fieldwork started on June the twelve and will remain in Tlaxcala until August the seventh. The group is integrated by 40 volunteers who during the next two months will live in the community of Buenvista and will work with people from four communities: Pocitos, Lazaro Cardenas, Delicias and Miahuapan el Bajo. The starting number of students is 150, we are sure more will sign up as the days come by. This is our second summer with the campaign in these communities and we have as a goal to set up a library and increase the participation of adults and teenagers in the project.

Veracruz

The campaign will take place in the community of San Jose Suchil, county of Maltrata. The population is 1315 and 400 cannot read or write. The group is integrated by 38 volunteers.

As a part of the literacy campaigns the volunteers have done two previous visits to the community. The first visit was on may the 16, 17 and 18, during the visit the volunteers presented the campaign to the community and to the authorities, also applied a survey to 252 inhabitants. The second visit was on the 22 and 23 of May and 166 inhabitants particiapated in the survey. The survey is applied to obtain a diagnostic on reading and writing skills.

The literacy campaign will begin on June the 19 and will finish on August the 7. We pretend to work with an initial number of 200 students. Besides the daily classes we will develop workshops on health for kids and teenagers, a cultural and science fair and community colloquy.
