Summary
Basur seeks to improve quality of life for communities with low resources by creating integral management of their solid waste.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The region known as "Línea Sur," has a low social and economic living standard and very few resources. Garbage is disposed of in an open-air dump and is dispersed many kilometers by strong winds. This affects the health and dignity of the communities, the fauna and the environment.
How will this project solve this problem?
Eradicate existing refuse dumps and create small, manual sanitary landfills. Recycle materials that could be useful for the community, including by compost. Create educational programs for the community about waste management and environment care.
Potential Long Term Impact
Reduces pollution of land and groundwater. Minimizes the impact of the current desertification by encouraging the creation of plant nurseries. Gives communities an environmental conscience and the know-how to take advantage of waste.
Project Message
Basur is very important because through education and simple tools, [there could be] a better quality of life, economic development, social equity and environmental protection.
