Summer 2017 Vacation Plans with GCSF

Khe Sanh students can't wait to meet Gabi & Hannah
Khe Sanh students can't wait to meet Gabi & Hannah

Dear GCSF Friends,

It’s sunny summer again and our young friends in Khe Sanh are enjoying their break from classes and studying. However, this summer will not only be filled with games and sweet treats for the happy students. In the last week of July, there will be two American volunteers coming to help the students practice and improve their English language skills.

Gabi and Hannah* will spend three weeks in Khe Sanh helping more than 100 students practice conversational English. They will work with the local English teacher to implement a three-week summer plan to enable the students to interact and learn from these native English speakers. In addition to their teaching responsibilities, they will be bringing donations from the U.S. from GCSF’s partner Global Playground. Globa Playground is donating 70 English books to the Khe Sanh Primary School and Khe Sanh Secondary School. Such donations include new English books in children’s classic literature as well as modern novels. “Young students around the world love reading about the adventures of Harry Potter, and our Vietnamese kids here are no different!”, shared GCSF program manager Tam Nguyen.

“English books are very useful for the children in Khe Sanh since they have limited access to these language resources. However, I’m delighted to know that not only are donations on the way but that there are American volunteers who will help our students to practice speaking English. I’ve shared the news with my Principal and he was very supportive. He asked me to collaborate with the volunteers to create the most effective summer program for our students. To be honest, even I myself do not have many chances to meet with English-speaking foreigners. This is a great chance for the students, myself, and my colleagues too.” - Mr. Thuat*, English teacher from Khe Sanh Secondary School.

The majority of the students are indigenous children who support their parents in field work. Books and foreign friends provide rare access to new sources of knowledge to the outside world. The GCSF Vietnam team is extremely excited to help extend the library outreach project to Huong Phung School, a nearby school with over 400 ethnic minority children.

With your support, more local students can get accessed to books and volunteers.
