Summary
KEENquatics is a recreational swimming program that brings together volunteer coaches with disabled athletes for an hour of swimming instruction and play in a uniquely tranquil setting.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
The therapeutic environment of the pool powerfully impacts the social and physical interactions of each KEENquatics athlete experiences. Every child who partakes in KEENquatics improves their ability to swim and play through the help of volunteer coaches and friends. Unfortunately we cannot offer this program to all of our athletes. Our goal is to provide each of our athletes the opportunity to develop their social and physical abilities through our KEENquatics program.
How will this project solve this problem?
While matched one-on-one with a volunteer KEENquatics athletes with a wide range of disabilities can have a swimming experience tailored to their ability level. Coaches build relationships in the water while creating a positive athletic experience.
Potential Long Term Impact
KEEN athletes are accepted with a lifetime membership at no cost to the families. Our youngest athletes are 5 years of age and reach matriculation at the age of 18. The KEENquatics program develops athletes ability in the water through adolescence.
