This project empowers orphaned and formerly trafficked Russian girls aged 11 to 18 with the skills, knowledge, and community networks they need to overcome their own exploitation and lead other girls toward freedom and independence.
When girls leave a state shelter or orphanage in Russia they have nothing. No family, no place to go, no job, no hope. Only 10% of Russian orphan girls in Moscow and St. Petersburg find employment and a way out of devastating poverty. They are high risk for sexual violence and 50% of them will be trafficked. But these girls - the JewelGirls - they have the knowledge, skills, networks and confidence to find jobs that help them become empowered young women and build the futures they deserve
Fifty percent of girls leaving Russian orphanages and state shelters are sold into prostitution within one year of leaving their orphanage. Not these girls. JewelGirls learn how to identify and stay out of situations of sexual violence and trafficking through FAIR Girls empowerment workshops. The JewelGirls program provides 50 girls in Moscow and St. Petersburg with the opportunity to empower themselves through job preparedness workshops, knowledge on how to stay safe from sexual violence and exploitation, art therapy, and access to professional counselors and a support network of peers. What's more, the money they earn through the sale of jewelry created in art therapy, together with the skills they learn, give them the self confidence and income generation they need to become free
