Summary

To maximize the benefits of the water and sanitation program, a health and hygiene promotion program targeting schools and the broader community is being implemented.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

Thousands of Guatemalan children die from preventable diseases such as diarrhea. Lack of water, sanitation and poor hygiene undermine the potential for significant health. The municipalities contribute funds to community water projects, fewer funds for sanitation, and almost nothing for hygiene education. In every program,Water For People intergrates health and hygiene education to ensure a more lasting impact.

How will this project solve this problem?

To re-enforce key health and hygiene messages special health/hygiene modules will be developed and taught in communities and schools. Trained teachers and health promoter will go from house to house teaching others.

Potential Long Term Impact

Decreased absenteeism in school children; decreased water and sanitation-related diseases; improved hygiene behaviors among students, parents and community members.

Project Message

It’s important to get everyone involved to strengthen local capacity. We want to invite both the Education and Health Ministry into the process. When they become involved, they learn what is needed
