Summary
We work with 660 7-9yr olds living in Mumbai’s slums. Weekly sports sessions provide them with positive role models, allow them to express themselves and present a view of a world outside the slums.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Children in Mumbai’s slum communities may have to work for their family’s survival -many can’t go to school. Some are abused, involved in gangs or drugs & have little hope of a different future. Magic Bus uses sport to demonstrate an alternative view of life: to teach that everyone is equal. Each week 660 7-9yr olds take part in sports sessions, where they develop essential skills and challenge themselves. Annually they take part in a camp to experience nature, play and enjoy their childhood.
How will this project solve this problem?
By encouraging children to play in mixed religion, gender and community teams we break down barriers and develop their physical and mental capabilities. Children are taught to respect others, to communicate and focus and just enjoy being children.
Potential Long Term Impact
660 7-9yr olds will be given a new outlook on life and positive role models to inspire and encourage them. They will build emotional, psychological and physical skills and, over time, confidence and self esteem to change their lives and communities.
Project Message
"Magic Bus came into my life and gave it a new direction. It helped me to think and make my life better. Now, I would also like to give whatever I have got from Magic Bus to my community."
