2.5 million children are homeless annually in the United States. Over half a million live in California. School on Wheels helps children K through 12 who live in shelters, motels, group foster homes, cars and on the streets. Our goal for 2014 is to provide support to 3100 students, can you help?
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Homeless students need extra support to succeed in school. Frequent moves and missed days of school mean they fall behind in their studies. One-on-one tutoring is the cornerstone of our program. School on Wheels is the only organization whose volunteers go to their students-wherever they may be-to tutor them one-on-one for one hour a week. Our goal for 2014 is to provide one-on-one tutoring services to 3,100 homeless children.
How will this project solve this problem?
Being a tutor to a homeless child doesn't take a lot of time, but the impact is enormous. Our volunteers come from all backgrounds and professions with one goal: to make a positive difference in the life of a homeless student. Every week, our volunteers give hope, educational assistance and support to the thousands of homeless children living in Southern California. Donating to our project will allow us to train and match more volunteers with homeless students.
Potential Long Term Impact
Our goal is to shrink the gaps in their education and provide them with the highest level of education possible. Our program serves as a consistent support system to homeless students at a time of great stress and fear. We bring the message to our students that they are cared about and important. We do this by offering: One-on-one weekly tutoring with a volunteer - Backpacks & school supplies - School assistance - Help locating lost records - Scholarship program - After School Learning Center.
