Summary

This project will give Christmas cheer to 167 children living in Korea's social welfare system. For many of the children we serve, this may be their only Christmas gift. Thanks to the amazing KKOOM community, we get to fulfill individual wishes through these precious gifts. This is an annual tradition for Korean Kids and Orphanage Outreach Mission, so the children we serve look forward to the holidays the most for this reason.

Challenge

For the past 70 years, over 1 million children have grown up in children's homes in South Korea. Since the 1950s, 80 to 90 percent of all children born to single mothers in Korea have ended up being a child raised in the social welfare system. There is a huge stigma that children and aged-out youth face who grew up in children's homes in South Korea.

Solution

KKOOM provides enrichment activities such as our holiday parties and scholarships to fulfill a gap that children living in Korea's social welfare system may face, whether it is academic, social, or personal barriers to success. By providing Christmas gifts and hosting an annual Christmas party, we are creating positive traditions and memories that will last a lifetime for the youth we serve at three children's homes.

Long-Term Impact

By providing Christmas cheer, Korean children will know that people all over the world care for them deeply. This financial support gives to children, youth, and young adults the confidence to achieve success and to fight against the stigma they face everyday from Korea's societal norms. Traditions matter and this helps create a strong, positive foundation as the children grow up in the social welfare system. These traditions enrich their personal well-being and add to their identity.
