Provide Clean Energy for Rural Poor in Tanzania

This woman is walking past a pile of waste that accumulates daily in the Lushoto market. With rising gas prices, the local government is no longer able to collect and dispose of waste regularly, so contaminated waste shares space with fruits and vegetables.

John Orio stands near the stream that runs through the Lushoto Town Market. Waste from the market enters and contaminates the water, while further down the stream families use the dirty water for washing, cooking, and bathing, setting the stage for dysentery and cholera outbreaks.

These women are in the Lushoto District Hospital as a result of ingesting contaminated food or water. By better controlling waste through economically and environmentally efficient means, the food in the market and the water in the town will be cleaner and healthier, saving money on hospital expenses and potentially saving lives.
